“If you want your child to be independent and to know that they can be impactful in a huge world - as small as they are - this is a great starting place.”

I’m the assistant director – children services at Matrix Head Start. Part of my job is to manage our Head Start education, disabilities, mental health, health and nutrition services. My own Head Start story starts much earlier though.

My mother got pregnant at age 17, the year after her mother passed away. She lived with my grandfather, who  thought that Head Start was an answer to his prayers. He wanted us to have a different life, so he made sure that I got signed up.

I remember reading “Tikki Tikki Tembo” and learning about different cultures. I remember home visits with a teacher, my mom, my sisters and me picking vegetables in our garden together and talking about nutrition.

I learned that education was fun and that teachers and parents should be on the same team. That love of learning has stuck with me throughout my life.

Years later, I came back to Head Start as a parent. My son was born with a serious heart condition. He had open heart surgery as an infant. He was delayed in gross motor skills as a result of that. I thought, who am I going to trust with my baby? He’s 20 years old now and thriving.

Later, professional opportunities brought me back to Head Start again. I’ve been with Head Start professionally now for 16 years after participating as an active parent for four years. I’ve proudly served at Matrix for six years.

My goal is to make sure that children get that same passion that I had as a young learner. If you want your child to be independent and to know that they can be impactful in a huge world – as small as they are – this is a great starting place.
